FAQs
Keeping you informed about your boat when you’re not there
- Can I have any mobile phone network I wish.
- Yes and it is advised you chose a network you know works well where you
normally keep your boat.
- How will I know when my credit is getting low.
- The system will not inform you so it is up to you to check periodically usually
using your computer or calling your chosen network.
- Where in the world will it work.
- It will work through Europe but the rest of the world has not yet been tested.
It will not work out at sea or anywhere for that matter where there is no
mobile signal.
- Can it text more than one number.
- Yes. You could arrange with your marina to be a recipient of messages to
check your boat out as and when required. For a cost of course!
- How long does it take to fit.
- Normally a day is sufficient for most boats and configurations.
- How do I top it up.
- Normally on line but cash points and shops where you would normally top
up a normal phone will also work.
You can have a contract so that you will never have to think about it but
you may find a little more expensive to run.
- Will it need servicing.
- Servicing is not required as the system is easy to check yourself but we would
recommend the internal phone battery be changed every 5 years.
If you would prefer, we can check the system over annually for a fee.
- What is the warranty.
- The system carries a 2 year warranty parts and labour.
- I have 2 batteries on my boat. Can it monitor both.
- No. It can only monitor one battery and it is recommended it be connected to
the same battery that supplies the bilge pumps when all master switches
are turned off as it is this battery that is required to pump out the water
should you develop a leak. If you are not worried about that then is can be
connected to the leisure battery instead. Usually these connections are made
near the battery charger and so a fly lead can be installed if you wish to chop
and change.
There is of course nothing stopping you having 2 systems thus giving you
the ability to monitor both batteries and much more.
- Can I fit it myself.
- Any DIY enthusiast or professional proficient in boat electrics could possibly
install the system but to be frank, the set up and configuration procedures
are more than a nightmare and so not recommended.
- How much current or electricity does the system consume.
- In standby the current draw is around 30mA so nothing to worry about.
However, if you turn items on such at your battery charger or fridge,
the power required to operate the related relay draws about 150mA
totaling 180mA which is too high for long periods. This does not matter
if turning on the battery charger but the fridge (especially if itself is powered
by the 12 volt battery) will soon run it flat.
